Wahmpreneur News Gets Air Time:
Good Day New York Covers Home-Based Working Moms

SIDNEY, NY -- In a segment of the WNYC-FOX morning news show Good Day New York that aired on June 14, 2001, correspondent Cheryl Washington interviewed Working Mother editor Shirley Breakey about how work-at-home moms can overcome isolation. Ms. Breakey opened her remarks with a short list of some of the best websites for moms to connect with other moms.

Calling them "some of our favorites," her list included four websites: HomeBased Working Moms (HBWM.com), Oxygen, WAHM.com and Sidney, NY-based Wahmpreneur News Magazine. Ms. Breakey noted that all these websites have message boards, articles and other resources for the home-based working mother.

"I thought it was great to be included," said Wahmpreneur News Magazine editor Dawn Rivers Baker. "Those are all terrific websites, and its good to know that the folks over at the Working Woman family of media properties have such a good opinion of what we're doing here."

The segment included suggestions of ways to connect offline as well, such as making lunch appointments, volunteering at the kids' school, attending career-related conferences and seminars, and joining groups for women and mothers.

"Interacting with other business moms is important not only socially but for their businesses," Washington pointed out.

During the interview, Ms. Breakey agreed. "It's hard to just sit inside your house and be creative," she said. "You need to bounce ideas off of other people, and you also want to network just to grow your own business and find out what the new trends are."

Ms. Baker thought the segment held one particular ray of sunshine. "It's nice to see home-based working women get media attention on an issue that doesn't revolve around work/life balance or fitting the kids in with the business," she said. "That stuff is important, but this kind of news segment suggests that the media is finally starting to take us seriously as businesswomen."
